Porsche Panamera

The presentation of the first generation (code name 970), which took place in April 2009 in China, revealed only part of the model range (3 versions), later expanded to 9 (including a diesel and a hybrid). Furthermore, there is a version with a 15cm longer wheelbase, called Executive.

In April 2013, a restyling was presented which, in addition to modifications to the headlights and bumpers, introduced some new engine features.

The 400 HP 4.8 V8 was replaced by the more powerful and high-performance 420 HP 3.0 V6 biturbo for the S version.

The Panamera is a 4-door coupé approximately 5 meters long, with top speeds ranging between 259 km/h for the Diesel version and 310 km/h for the Turbo S version. The four seats consist of single seats; the external style deliberately recalls that of the Porsche 911, especially at the front, so as to make the Panamera immediately recognizable as a Porsche.

Production takes place in the Leipzig plant, the same one where the Porsche Cayenne is assembled, demonstrating the presence of many points in common between the two models (starting from the engines and the integral transmission on the 4S and Turbo models).

The markets for which the model is intended are, in addition to Europe and the USA, above all the emerging markets (Russia, China, Middle East): for this reason the presentation took place at the Chinese show in Shanghai.

In April 2013, the restyled version of the Panamera was announced, which then made its debut at the Shanghai Auto Show. The plug-in hybrid version, called Panamera S E-Hybrid, was introduced on the US market in November 2013.

The second generation Panamera was unveiled on 28 June 2016 at an event held in Berlin. The code name is Type 971; the car, built on the VW Group's new Porsche MSB (Modular Standard Drive) platform, is 35 millimeters longer and 5 mm wider than the first generation, with 30 millimeters more wheelbase. The interior features a redesigned dashboard, with center console instrumentation made up of touch-sensitive surfaces replacing the previous generation with physical buttons. The tachometer, the only analogue instrument, is mounted centrally on the instrument panel and recalls that of the 1955 Porsche 356 A. The new car is equipped with two seven-inch displays instead of the classic pointer dials in the dashboard, with another screen 12.3-inch touchscreen that also acts as a satellite navigator with Apple CarPlay integration present in the center console. The new instrumentation is called Advanced Cockpit. Under the bonnet is a new range of engines, with only the Panamera 4S, 4S Diesel and Turbo versions available at launch.

In March 2017 Porsche presented the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid car. The Turbo S E-Hybrid features the 4.0-liter V8 engine from the Panamera Turbo, but it comes paired with an electric motor. The total system output is 680 hp, making it the second most powerful production Porsche ever built, after the 918 Spyder.

In this new model the torque of the overall system rises to 850 Nm, reaching the torque level of the Diesel version. Performance also increases, 0-100 is covered in 3.4 and 0-200 in 8.2 seconds.

The new Panamera aesthetically no longer features the rounded tailgate that had divided automotive critics of the previous series, but now the tail with a more tapered and squared style recalls that of the 991 through the headlights and the longitudinal rear LED strip. This improvement in design helped clarify the model's identity as a touring-oriented sports car.

In March 2017 at the Geneva Motor Show, a shooting brake version of the Panamera II series built on the same base, called Panamera Sport Turismo, was presented.

What is the appropriate response to Chinese monopolies?

Temu has become the most downloaded app on iPhones in 2024. The e-commerce platform only launched around the end of 2022. Temu now is available in 86 countries. Compare this to Amazon, which has been around for almost 30 years, which operates in 22 countries.

At the same time, there is also talk of banning TikTok in the USA. Both TikTok and Temu belong to Chinese-based companies.

TikTok has generated about $16.1 billion of revenue in 2023. Temu is projected to earn more than $50 billion in sales this year. These are very new platforms, compared to their competition and yet they have developed rapidly. The world market is saturated because of overproduction and this has led to economic friction between the USA and China. These figures are just one more indicator of that.

As with Amazon and Facebook, Temu and TikTok display the tendency towards planning and monopolisation under capitalism. However, the development of the means of production have again run into the barriers of the nation state and the private ownership of the means of production. The liberals say we should break-up these monopolies with “anti-trust” acts and whatnot. As Lenin stated in his book on imperialism, this would be reactionary, as it takes the development of the means of production and distribution backwards. What is necessary is the seizure of these means of production by the working class (without compensation) and a planned system of production under workers’ control. Socialism is the only way forward.

Bad News of the Week

"The Sick Man of Europe" was the headline of the British business magazine 'The Economist' in 1999, describing the toxic mixture of the burdens of reunification, a rigid labor market, excessive social benefits and a lack of dynamism that weighed Germany down at the time. 25 years later, it's that time again. Because Europe's largest economy is sick again. And this time even more fundamentally. And with very bad timing.

Yes, there was the coronavirus shock. And yes, there were supply chain problems and inflation. But the fundamental problem is homemade: Germany has been asleep politically and economically. And must now be careful not to fall into a coma. Like Japan, Germany has always been an exporter of high-quality goods. And, like Japan, has been too slow and inadequate in adapting to a new global economy. The shift of the dominant nations, the USA and China, has made it a very different one today than it was ten years ago.

Thanks to its huge market, China has been able to force foreign companies to settle locally and enter into partnerships. Originally "the world's extended workbench", China was able to benefit from an enormous transfer of technological knowledge in a short space of time. And thus became a quality supplier itself. As a result, China now covers more of its own production needs and has also become a serious competitor on the global market. Both bad for exporting nations.

The USA, on the other hand, has once again placed itself at the forefront of technological development (connectivity, digital, AI, etc.) and at the same time has brought industrial production back into the country through an increasingly isolationist trade policy. The restrictions imposed by Donald Trump in his first term of office were not (!) reversed by Joe Biden's government. And Trump has unequivocally announced that he will continue to tighten the America First screw - his declared favorite word is "import tariffs". Both bad for exporting nations.

The German flagship industry, automotive manufacturing, is symptomatic of the general economic trend. After decades of success stories and technological and brand leadership, we were crushed by electromobility. Which we underestimated in many respects. For example, the fact that it considerably simplifies vehicle construction - which brings us back to the competitive pressure from the USA and China. Now the share prices of our former industrial jewels are plummeting, short-time work is being introduced everywhere and now there is even talk of entire plant closures: Volkswagen - not long ago worlds biggest manufacturer - alone wants to close three German factories.

The political magazine Cicero analyzes: "The location conditions in Germany are getting worse and worse. In particular, the excessive bureaucracy, the tax burden and the high energy prices are having a negative impact. If politicians fail to find solutions here, things will look bad for the industrial future." Rising unemployment will increase social spending. At the same time, labor costs will continue to rise due to inflation. And the infrastructure, which has been neglected for 20 years, should be urgently and expensively modernized. Not to mention the necessary climate-neutral restructuring of the economy. I find it difficult to be optimistic about our economic future right now...

Good News of the Week

Lately, Ukraine has had to accept rather bad news from the USA. Donald Trump himself and his entourage have confirmed more than once that the extensive military aid from the USA will certainly not continue in full. This means that half of the arms deliveries are at risk and full compensation from other countries - Germany is a distant second - is practically impossible.

But now there has probably been a kind of farewell gift from Joe Biden, which could possibly even be a game changer. It concerns long-range weapons systems and their use on Russian territory. Until now, this was formally prohibited, as Ukraine's partner countries wanted to avoid the escalation of being seen as a party of war themselves. Specifically, this means that the US ATACMS missiles with their range of 300 kilometers can also be deployed behind the Russian border.

This is a decisive strategic advantage that replaces a previous disadvantage. Until now, the aggressor's supply routes, weapons depots, military bases, etc. have been practically unassailable. The outcry on the Russian side is correspondingly great. The "first deputy chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Russian Federation Council" (yeah, that's his title) Vladimir Jabarov even speaks of an "unprecedented step of escalation that could lead to the start of the Third World War".

Ukraine's NATO neighbor Poland, for example, sounds different. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski wrote on Twitter that Biden had responded to the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia and the massive Russian missile attacks on Ukraine "in a language that Vladimir Putin understands". Let's hope so. And let's also hope that Germany, for example, allows the use of its Taurus cruise missiles, which experts see as ideal for Ukrainian defense purposes. The current Chancellor Olaf Scholz has always refused to do so. By contrast, the likely incoming chancellor (in the early elections at the end of February 2025), conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz, is in favor. As far as I know, this is the only position where I am leaning more towards Merz than Scholz. So at least there's something good in this respect too...

Personal happy moment of the week

I've really thought about it. But I'm so stressed at the moment that happiness just doesn't get enough attention. But I did remember one thing: we got our winter tires fitted just in time before the first snow. You get modest in age... ;-)

I couldn't care less...

...that it is always possible to use legal sophistry to overturn a groundbreaking court ruling. In this case, and once again at the expense of the environment. The British-Dutch oil and natural gas giant Shell does not have to drastically reduce its CO2 emissions after all. This is because a civil court in The Hague overturned a corresponding climate ruling by the court of first instance and dismissed the lawsuit brought by environmentalists. My Thoughts on How To Improve Traffic:

Video Traffic: If they are really reviewing the products, and they do have unique images which suggests they own the products, I think they could do more with video to drive traffic. Adding full video reviews of the products on Youtube and Tik Tok could be more revenue.

Social Traffic: Despite having a social media presence they have very little following and haven’t posted much social content – if this was something they focused on it could become a bigger traffic driver.

Build an Email List: Although sites built around specific product types can be difficult to build an email list there are options such as a lead magnet advising on the best ways to clear the air in your house or the best device for specific type of air issues.

My Thoughts on How To Improve Revenue:

Avoid Distracting The Reader: The top of some of their “best X” affiliate reviews have highlighted boxes that randomly link out to other websites (I believe in the thought that linking out to authority sites is a good signal to Google, which is true) but this is likely to send people away from the affiliate content and lose sales, so put those links at the bottom of the page or within the content.

Call To Action Buttons: There’s no buttons with call to actions in the “top 3” product review comparison tables on their affiliate content, just text links, big, colourful buttons, would generate more attention and clicks.

Showcase The Personal Experience: Though they seemingly have unique images of the products and even videos on Youtube showcasing the products their written reviews and affiliate content don’t really highlight that personal experience of using the product, it still reads like a very generic review written by someone who hasn’t actually used it (even though I believe they may have owned and used the products).

Don’t Display Prices: They are displaying prices directly in reviews and comparison affiliate posts which I would discourage because one big reason people will click your affiliate buttons is to check the price on the retailer.

Avoid Listing The Retailer: On their call to action buttons they often use terms like “Buy on Amazon” which although I’ve never tested it specifically I believe could cause a reduction in clicks because people may think “OK, I’ll check it on Amazon later” or open Amazon direcrly without clicking your links or buttons.

Biggest Takeaways To Apply To Your Own Site

Product Sites Still Work: Going all in one specific product type (in this case devices that clean the air of your house) and covering every piece of information, reviewing every product, and comparing all the different models can give you high topical authority and extremely high traffic (an estimated 100,000+ visitors p/m in this case).

Using the Products Builds Trust: If you can buy the products and take original photos and videos to add into your content then do it – this shows much more trust because people can see you have actually used them rather than regurgitating the Amazon listing information.

Always Use Call to Action BUTTONS: Never use text link call to actions but instead always use big, colourful, contrasting buttons people can’t miss.

Don’t Distract Your Visitor: Never put anything at the top of your pages that can take your visitor AWAY from the thing you want them to focus on otherwise you’ll lose their attention and lose clicks and sales.

Un(con)Trolled Podcast: A Drama About The Chilling Effect Of Social Media

 

We reviewed this wonderful audio fiction show last month. Yet, it's so different, unique, and refreshing that we had to remind you to check it out. It's short, but will leave you stunned, shocked, scratching your head, and, maybe, even howling at the moon.

 Podcast networks spend millions of dollars on top-notch audio fiction that typically attracts hordes of listeners and opportunistic advertisers. For example, Spotify scored big with Batman Unburied in 2022 and has recently released Batman Unburied: Fallen City. 

Such a successful audio fiction podcast costs at least a million dollars to produce with production costs, voice actor salaries, and distribution and marketing. 

This is another reason why independent podcasts are so essential and valuable to the podcasting industry. There is a recently released independent audio fiction podcast, Un(con)Trolled, that should win awards and was created and produced at a fraction of the cost of some of these network audio fiction shows.

 Un(con)Trolled is a raw, gripping tale of social media influencer, Kenah, who has mastered the art of uncovering her Internet trolls’ darkest secrets and exacting her own brand of karmic justice. As her journey twists between unsettling encounters and mental manipulation, the line between control and chaos blurs, raising one chilling question: who is really in control?

 This audio drama is eight episodes in length, with episode runtimes often less than seven minutes. But in this case, the abbreviated runtime works to heighten the suspense, the fractured sense of reality, the tricks a vengeful mind can play on itself, and the racist, misogynistic, and homophobic trolling that too often defines social media.

Un(con)Trolled is the brain child of Kimberly Renee, who was named 2022's Woman of the Year by USA Today.  Renee is a sought-after speaker, powerful storyteller and commentator, and internationally-awarded social activist. She’s also known for her advocacy work, uncovering hidden truths in history, and creating programs to improve the lives of those in historically marginalized communities.

In 2020, she founded the internationally award-winning plant-based national hunger relief effort Food Love by Might Be Vegan to serve those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic, giving particular attention to needs within BIPOC communities and people under medical care.

​In 2022, she was inducted into Meta’s 2022 We The Culture class.

Passionate about all things justice, intersectional environmentalism, and plant-based living, Kimberly Renee is a multi-hyphenate creator, producer, chef, actor, and singer with a bachelor of science in marketing from HBCU North Carolina A&T State University.

All of those accomplishments and attributes flow into Un(con)Trolled.

 When we asked Kimberly about the creation and production of Un(con)Trolled, she said: "The sound design is by me. I made the choices and selected elements to create the scenes. I recorded in studio at Grindhaus Studios, which is a Black-owned studio in Charlotte, North Carolina. I used one of their engineers to bring to life my vision."

Kimberly worked on every aspect of the podcast. "The vision for the artwork is mine. I ended up hiring two people to bring it to life. First, I worked with an illustrator who drew the keyboard and keys as I instructed. (The broken keys on the table are U, N, Control, L, E, and D, which spell the title.) Once finished, I mocked up the keyboard with the background and added a title (selecting font and colors). Then, I hired a second illustrator to add the broken effect across the image."

When I asked Kimberly about the major themes in Un(con)Trolled, she answered: "Bullying online is easy. The ways people hurl negativity at others online often reflect behavior they’d never display in person. The perceived distance between the bully and their target gives them a false sense of security. But what happens when that distance disappears? What if there were real consequences for what we say online?"

Kimberly continues: "Big picture, Un(con)Trolled offers a fictional lens into the realities of cyberbullying, online predators, and the mental health impacts of social media. As the adage goes, 'On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.' I would go so far as to say that you never know which dog will bite, so scroll with caution. And that goes for bullies and those being bullied."

Kimberly is planning on a second season after the critical success of Un(con)Trolled. 

"Yes, I'll work on season two very soon. Lots of ideas in my head about what happens next. I'd love to have the show purchased by a podcasting network for season two, and soon after produce it for a television streaming service," Kimberly says.

I agree with Kimberly Renee. After listening to the skills she has evinced by creating and producing Un(con)Trolled, a podcast network should snap up her skills. Like Liam Neeson in the movie Taken, Kimberly Renee does have a particular set of skills that include scaring us, making us think, making us question reality, sending us down solipsistic dead ends, and offering a warning about the blurring of the line between the digital universe and physical reality.
